Traveling to Costa Rica
Hey all! I apologize on the delay since my last publish, my life has been full of studying. However, I am back now and have not stopped traveling! I have so many trips to share with all of you.
Scroll to read about information you need to know before traveling down to the beautiful country of Costa Rica!
Order Colone’s before leaving
As of June 7th, 2023 the exchange rate for US dollars to Costa Rican Colone’s is 1 USD = 538.730873 CRC. The exchange rate changes constantly, it normally stays within a range, so don’t expect too much change. It is much easier to order online through your bank before leaving, taxes in airports tend to run high when exchanging currency.
Round trip airfare ticket is required, no one way tickets are allowed for non-citizens
As each country has different requirements, Costa Rica requires a round trip ticket before visiting, most airline sites will not allow you to even purchase a one way ticket. You are only allowed to stay in Costa Rica for 90 days without a Visa.
Uber is illegal
Yes, you read that correctly. Uber unfortunately IS illegal in Costa Rica. The driver will receive a steep fine if caught operated an uber. If a car is stopped because of an expected uber, the car could potentially be impounded and the passengers would be responsible finding a ride. The Uber app is still workable and you are able to order a ride, however it is looked down upon. Even though its illegal, Uber is now one of the most “normal” forms of transportation in the country for locals and tourists.
Make sure to have American cash for back up
Most businesses accept American Dollars, in fact they prefer it. I ran out of Colone’s on my last day of the trip. My taxi for the airport was $50 a person and they only wanted cash, I had nothing left. Thankfully the taxi driver let me stop by an ATM and pull out cash for the ride. Having some extra cash would have saved some time.
Bring deet bug spray
The CDC recommends, “an insect repellent that contains at least 20% DEET.” Since Costa Rica has plenty of rainforests, mosquitos are around. If you want to do any tours, hikes or other outdoor activities, it won’t hurt you to be cautious. I attached the link and product name of the bug spray I purchased.

Rent a car if wanting to leave town to visit other areas
I did rent a car the first time I visited the San Jose & Jaco area, it was worthwhile. However, it wasn’t necessary the second time around since we were going to be staying around the area. I highly suggest renting a car if you are interested in hiking, visiting national parks or traveling to different parts of the country. It will be much much simpler and cost efficient.
Rental car deposit is $1,000
Do not be surprised if the rental car agency asks you for a $1,000 deposit. Each agency has different agreements regarding international car rentals. Make sure you either call or do some research so you know what to expect!
Stay at a hostel
It was my moms first hostel experience and she absolutely loved it! We stayed at Selina Jaco on Jaco Beach. The first thing I do when planning a trip is checking to see if there is a Selina in the area, I love their properties! Each hostel is homey, has a great location, super friendly staff and offers plenty of options regarding shared/ private rooms. Hostels for me have been a blessing in disguise. I truly enjoy meeting people from all over the world, learning new cultures and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.
Great place to visit solo
I can’t stress this enough.. if you can travel alone at least once in your lifetime, DO IT! It will help you grow mentally, emotionally and physically, its beyond worth the experience. Do it for yourself. (:
As always,
Thanks for reading!
